Faith Inspiring Words Preaching The Word

We need not be afraid

The phrase “when we ride with the Lord, we need not be afraid, even if we don’t know what the future holds” is a statement of faith that emphasizes trust in God’s sovereignty, love, and guidance. The phrase reflects the idea that, with God, we can find peace and security, even in uncertain or challenging times. This concept is rooted in the Bible, which contains numerous passages that encourage believers to trust in God’s goodness and provision.

One of the foundational passages that speaks to this idea is Psalm 23. This beloved psalm is often recited at funerals, but its message of comfort and reassurance is applicable to all believers, regardless of their circumstances. The psalm begins by declaring that the Lord is the believer’s shepherd, and goes on to describe the ways in which the Lord provides for and protects his people. Verse 4 in particular speaks to the idea of not fearing the future: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” This verse emphasizes that even in the midst of trials and difficulties, the Lord is present and providing comfort and protection.

Another passage that speaks to the idea of not fearing the future is found in Matthew 6:25-34. In this passage, Jesus is teaching his disciples about the importance of trusting in God’s provision, rather than worrying about material possessions. He asks, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (verse 27), and goes on to point out that the birds of the air and the flowers of the field are cared for by God, despite their lack of effort or worry. Jesus concludes by saying, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (verse 33). This passage emphasizes that when we trust in God’s provision and seek his kingdom above all else, we can be confident that he will take care of our needs.

Another example of trusting in God’s provision is found in the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50. Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers and ends up in Egypt, where he is falsely accused and imprisoned. However, through a series of miraculous events, Joseph rises to become second-in-command to Pharaoh and is able to save the entire nation of Egypt from a severe famine. When Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt seeking food, Joseph reveals his true identity to them and says, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20). Joseph’s story demonstrates how God can use even the most difficult circumstances for good, and encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and plan, even when we don’t understand what is happening.

The book of Isaiah also contains many passages that speak to the idea of trusting in God’s sovereignty and protection. For example, in Isaiah 41:10, God says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This passage emphasizes that God is with us and will provide the strength and help we need, even in challenging times. Another passage in Isaiah that speaks to this idea is found in chapter 43, where God says, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:2).
